Reasons to choose our school:

Focus on Teaching

All we do is teach. We do not sell or rent musical instruments. This leaves us free to specialize in one thing - providing the highest quality of musical instruction.  The directors of the school are all professional performers and teachers themselves.  The faculty consists of teachers who exhibit a high level of performance in their instrument and that special ability to impart their knowledge to students of all ages and skill levels.  As a school of music, we offer our students many advantages that they might not otherwise enjoy. One such advantage is access to a highly skilled faculty and a stimulating learning environment.

To help our teachers and students, our management handles all administrative duties such as answering phone calls, scheduling, collecting fees, and arranging concerts, which can take precious time during a lesson.  This allows our teachers to concentrate all their attention on their students.

University-Trained Teachers in Performance

Having university training in performance, our teachers have greater insight into playing their instruments than those who have not.  This enables students to progress faster with more enjoyment.  Teachers with this background know the good habits necessary to play well.  Some places may have a couple of teachers with this kind of training; at our schools, all teachers have these qualifications.

Pedagogy

Our teachers have also learned pedagogy or instructional theory which means that the lessons we provide are catered to the learning style and personality of the student, making learning fun.

Motivational Environment

In a school environment a student cannot be distracted by t.v., pets, ringing phones, siblings, store congestion, or anything else.  With only a half-hour to one-hour lesson per week, a professional school environment can produce better results with an atmosphere focused exclusively on learning.  Students are also motivated by hearing peers and by being exposed to a variety of musical instruments.  This helps translate into more practicing and commitment at home.

All Ages - Beginners to Advanced

Our current students range from 3 years old to students in their retirement years. We take care to teach what you want to learn so music is rewarding for students of all ages and levels.

Private Lessons

Private lessons ensure that the student has the undivided attention of the teacher and can progress at a level suited to them individually.

Regular Recitals
Recitals are held at least two to three times a year at local churches which students are encouraged to participate in.  Recitals not only give students an opportunity to build their confidence by performing, they also help give clear, tangible short term goals to focus on.  This leads to remarkable progress in a very short time.  As well, recitals help motivate students to practice regularly at home.  Participation in music competitions and workshops is also available.

Guitar Club and Studio Classes

In addition to private lessons, students have fun playing in a group and for each other with a teacher's instruction.  In some studio classes, students take a lesson while others observe.  These are designed as an opportunity for interaction that would add to the learning experience as well as help keep up motivation for practicing (frequency of these classes depends upon participation).

Convenient Scheduling For Families

To save you time and running around, families can often schedule 2 or more members to take lessons at the same time.

Exam Preparation

We offer full training in repertoire, studies, technique, theory, and sight-reading to prepare classical students for Guild, OMEA, and OMTA auditions.

Preschool Music Program

From age 3, children can begin to learn to play the piano, violin, cello, guitar, or drums.  Because music is like language, even at a young age children can absorb music and begin enjoying playing an instrument.

Suzuki Music Program

Starting at age 3, children and their parent(s) can learn together to play violin, viola, or cello in our Suzuki music lessons and classes.

Looking to save time and money?  Read our special report:

When it takes students to accomplish in 4 years what they could have accomplished in 2 or 3, the result is that they or their parents have ended up spending almost twice the amount of money needed for lessons.  Over the past 16 years (at another location), it has been our experience that many students who came to us after having studied elsewhere had learned in approximately 4 years what they should have learned in 2 or 3.  When this occurs, it is inevitable that students have to re-learn basic fundamentals because they did not receive quality teaching, and having to go back to undo certain habits can sometimes diminish the joy of playing and slow up progress, while more has to be spent on lessons along the way.  Why is this happening?  Here are three reasons:

1.      Many of those students came from some music stores where their teacher did not have any performance training from a reputable university which gives a prospective teacher a vast amount of knowledge that has been passed down through history.  The teachers at universities are professional performers themselves.  Sometimes teachers at a store have a Music Education degree that does not have performance requirements on a specific instrument.  Consequently, we find basic fundamentals missing in the form of holding the instrument, in the reading of rhythm, in the production of a good sound, in the area of playing in tune or ear training (which applies to all instruments and voice with the exception of piano, guitar and drums where intonation is not a direct issue), and in musical expression.  It is very helpful that stores sell music, supplies, and instruments.  But because they primarily specialize in this, teaching is usually a sideline vehicle.  Sometimes teachers at a store have other duties than just teaching (e.g. collecting fees, re-scheduling, etc.) which can distract their attention and affect the quality of teaching.

2.     A few of those students came from private teachers who had taught in their homes for many years.  Having years of teaching experience in itself is not necessarily a good indicator of a good teacher because if he does not have performance training or degrees, or if he is self-taught, the students again are very likely missing some areas listed above in their playing.

3.    Some students had learned to play in a public school without one-on-one private instruction from a teacher specializing in the students’ instruments.  As a result, most of the problems listed above become apparent.

How can you not let this happen to you?  At Avon School of Music and Strongsville Academy of Music, all our teachers have performance training in their instrument from a reputable university as well as that unique teaching ability needed to pass along the musical knowledge.  Learning to play in 2 years what might take you 3-4 saves you a lot in terms of money and frustration.  Having a solid foundation from the beginning covering all the areas listed above and more, students progress faster and enjoy it more.
